X-Win32’s
sharp focus on high-performance, stability, ease of
use and affordability make this product ideally
suited for today’s network administrator and
technical staff.
In
2000, X-Win32 became the top-rated PC X server for
connecting Windows PCs with UNIX servers including
Sun Solaris, HP/UX, IBM AIX, SCO, FreeBSD, as well
as Linux machines running Red Hat, SuSE, Mandrake
and other distributions of Linux. In a recent
comparison of nine top PC X servers by Network
Computing Magazine, X-Win32 was chosen as “Best PC
X Server” as the product scored the highest
overall rating and ranked first in four of seven
evaluation categories and second in two more.
Its
simplicity and high-speed have been a key reason why
1.5 million people around the world are using
X-Win32. From the outset in 1989, StarNet’s
strategy has been to keep X-Win32 focused on the PC
X server functionality, resulting is a product that
offers both the highest performance and stability as
well as leading-edge functionality such as OpenGL
support and integrated SSH.
Peripheral
functions such as NFS file-sharing, FTP, terminal
emulation and Telnet are not part of the program,
however they are available in the AccessNFS/X-Win32
Bundle
Support
Success in delivering any software solution in
today’s diverse and demanding market depends as
much on how a vendor supports its product as
considerations like features, performance and price.
X-WIn32 offers the broadest support among its peers,
including:
OS
SUPPORT: X-Win32 runs all Windows desktop platforms,
including Windows 95, 98, ME, XP, NT4.0 and Windows
2000.
MAINTENANCE
& UPGRADE SUPPORT: X-Win32 licenses come with
life-time free tech support and free upgrade
coverage for one year after the date of purchase.
Commercial site licenses of 25 or more licenses even
come standard with THREE years of upgrade coverage!
SSH
SUPPORT: X-Win32 has broadened the use of the PC X
server software by adding the ability to access
servers remotely through firewalls with securely
encrypted data. X-Win32 remains the only PC X server
that offers an SSH connect option in addition to the
standard rsh, rexec and XDMCP connections. All new
and upgraded X-Win32 licenses come bundled with the
“SSH
for Windows” program from
F-Secure Corp. a leading developer of data security
products. The SSH client, which enables the X-Win32
SSH Connect Module, normally retails for $120.00 but
is added to X-Win32 at no additional cost.
OPENGL
SUPPORT: X-Win32 also comes standard with support
for high-level 3-D OpenGL applications. X-Win32’s
OpenGL code includes support for hardware
acceleration. If your computer has a graphics card
that support Microsoft’s implementation of OpenGL,
X-Win32 will send the OpenGL calls from the server
through the graphics card which increases
performance by a factor of 10:1 or better over
software-only-based implementations of OpenGL found
in competing products.
LANGUAGE
SUPPORT: X-Win32 is currently available in English
and German. Scheduled for release in January 2002,
X-Win32 will add Japanese, French, Spanish and
Italian language versions.
FONT
SUPPORT: X-Win32 ships standard with 75 dpi, 100 dpi
and miscl. fonts. X-Win32’s X-Config module allows
the user to create links to font servers. In
addition, Far East and other special font sets can
be downloaded from the Downloads Page.
ENGINEERING
SUPPORT: With customer requests for new features and
other improvements received almost monthly, StarNet
engineers quickly react to implement customer-driven
features or fix problems with specific applications.
Recently, Cadence, the leading developer of advanced
semiconductor design software, released a new
version of its product that caused major delays when
zooming in on a section of the IC design when using
a PC X server. Working with Cadence, StarNet
engineers quickly solved the problem and released a
new version.
X-Win32
Features
X-Win32 allows you to display multiple X
applications running on host servers onto the
Windows desktop. Unlike other PC-to-Unix
connectivity solutions, the X applications can run
right alongside Windows applications and you can
copy and paste data between the X and Windows
applications. With the XDMCP connection option, you
can even import an entire Unix or Linux desktop,
such as CDE, KDE or Gnome and effectively turn the
Windows PC into a powerful Unix or Linux
workstation.
One
of the more popular features of X-Win32, not
available in most other PC X servers, is “Multiple
XDMCP Sessions” that allows users to connect to
several Unix or Linux machines at the same time and
“alt-tab” between desktops from each server.
X-Win32 is the only PC X server capable of
automatically allowing multi-display operations.
On
average, two or three new versions of X-Win32 are
released each year, each offering new functions and
performance improvements. Recent features added in
Version 5 include:
-
X-Config,
a user-friendly Tab and Radio Button-based user
interface for configuring the Windows PC,
setting up sessions that connect to a Unix/Linux
server.
-
Windows
Terminal Server Support lets system
administrators set up X-Win32 on a Windows or
CITRIX terminal server to allow the terminals,
even diskless thin client terminals, connect to
a Linux or Unix server.
-
An
industry-first SSH Connect Module that lets you
set up SSH-based sessions when F-Secure’s
"SSH for Windows" SSH client software
is also installed on the PC.
-
A
Session Wizard was developed for new users to
make it simple to set up sessions that connect
to a Linux or Unix server.
-
An
XDMCP Multicast option lets the user select only
those X hosts on a network that he/she is
interested in, thus screening out the often
dozens or hundreds of other X servers and
workstations connected to a LAN.
-
Individual
User Settings Support on Windows XP, NT and
2000.
-
Multiple
Monitor Support for Windows 98 and Windows XP
and 2000.
-
Pop-up
dialog boxes now have a user-friendly Help
button that connects to the corresponding page
in the Help system.
-
Multiple
Networking Cards are now supported for users who
use more than one networking card in their
Windows PC.
-
The
Keyboard Edit routine, which allows users to
customize their keyboards, has been
re-designed to be more versatile and simpler to
use.
